When the ultrasonic wave propagates, it will reflect when it meets the target. When the echo acts on the crystal of the underwater acoustic transducer, the electrical signals may be obtained on the two ends of the transducer due to the piezoelectric effect. Like radar antenna, underwater acoustic transducer not only transmits and receives ultrasonic signals, but also has sharp directionality. Only in this way can the azimuth of the target be determined. Sonar devices use many piezoelectric crystals to form transducer arrays to achieve sharp directivity. Therefore, the underwater acoustic transducer of sonar is very large, and it is usually installed in the underwater part of the bow of a warship.

Transducers are devices that convert sound energy to electricity (or two different forms of energy). Most of the underwater acoustic transducers/equipments use electro-acoustic conversion, because this conversion mode is most convenient for manual control. The transducer used underwater is called underwater acoustic transducer.

The ultrasonic transducer is called the transmitting transducer, which generates electrical signals from the electronic oscillator to excite the transducer to produce mechanical vibration, and thus propels the water medium to emit acoustic waves into the water. Conversely, the transducer that generates vibration under the excitation of sound wave and converts sound energy into electricity is called receiving transducer or hydrophone.


Normally Piezo Ceramic components used in underwater acoustic transducer/hydrophone is piezo tubes, Piezo Sphere or piezo Trapezoid strip.
